Understanding Dr. Vikas Divyakirti and His Connection to the IAS

When people ask “Is Vikas Divyakirti an IAS?”, they are usually curious about whether the famous educator and founder of Drishti IAS actually served as an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer.

The short answer is no, he is not an IAS officer, though he did successfully clear the prestigious Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination early in his career.

The Journey: From Civil Services Aspirant to Educator

Dr. Vikas Divyakirti’s relationship with the civil services involves a fascinating transition from government service to full-time education:

  • Clearing the UPSC Exam: In 1996, Dr. Divyakirti cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination on his very first attempt, securing an All-India Rank (AIR) of 384.
  • Brief Government Tenure: Following his selection, he joined the Central Secretariat Service and served briefly as a section officer in the Department of Official Language under the Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi.
  • Resignation: Realizing that his true calling lay in teaching and shaping young minds rather than working within traditional government bureaucracy, he chose to resign from his post after just a few months to pursue education.

Founder of Drishti IAS

In November 1999, Dr. Divyakirti founded Drishti IAS (originally focused on helping students, particularly in the Hindi medium, prepare for the rigorous civil services examinations) in Mukherjee Nagar, Delhi. Over the decades, the institution has grown into one of India’s most prominent coaching and educational platforms for UPSC aspirants.
