Beyond the Plastic Glow: Which AI Image Generators Actually Produce Photorealistic Human Faces for Portrait Photography Clients?
For decades, the holy grail of digital imaging has been the human face. Capturing the subtle play of light across a cheekbone, the organic scattering of sub-surface light through skin (subsurface scattering), micro-textures like pores and fine vellus hair, and the genuine glint of human emotion in an eye has traditionally required a professional camera, expensive glass, controlled studio lighting, and hours of retouching.
Today, portrait photographers, creative directors, and digital artists are turning to generative AI not to replace their cameras entirely, but to push boundaries, concept shoots, generate backgrounds, and deliver hyper-realistic human subjects. However, not all AI image models are created equal. If you are building workflows for portrait photography clients, the “plastic, wax-figure” look of early AI is an absolute dealbreaker.
